What is the difference between AWD and 4WD ?

In 4 Wheel Drive cars power is sent through the gearbox to a center differential splitting the power to the front and back axles where it meets differentials at the front and rear. Power can also be directed between the left and right wheels. An All Wheel Drive (AWD) car uses a center differential to distribute the engine’s torque between the front and rear drive axles.

In difficult driving conditions on the road AWD cars offer greater traction than 2WD cars, but if you need a more robust car a 4WD is a much more suitable option as it can perform well both on and off road. 4 Wheel drive cars are designed to provide power and grip on rugged terrain – if one wheel gets stuck in mud, sand or snow the other three wheels can help drive the vehicle forward – even some sports cars have 4WD to help provide traction on the start line.
