How does a clutch wear out?

The clutch engages and disengages power transmission from the drive shaft transferring the power to the engine and drive wheels.  The clutch allows engine power to be applied gradually when a vehicle is starting and disengages power when changing between gears without turning off the engine, allowing you control over your speed.  The individual parts wear over time and can be replaced independently of each other, however when changing the flywheel the clutch system needs to be replaced.

How do you know if your clutch needs replacing?

The clutch should release smoothly in both directions – if your clutch becomes hard to press or release or make a grinding sound it may be time for a replacement. As most of the clutch is hidden from view you should get your vehicle looked at by a qualified technician. Before your clutch is replaced your garage will eliminate other potential causes of your problem, for example the pedal-arm bushings or slave master cylinder.
